* Crafting in Public

Posted on June 10th, 2005 by maitreya. Filed under Inspiration.

Just back from yet another trip for a meeting. The summer traveling scarf is about 1.5 feet now. After still another trip next week, maybe I’ll finish it off. I think it’s funny that my 9th or 10th knitting project is a garter stitch scarf on big needles. It’s with the leftovers of patons divine from the spiderweb capelet.

Anyway, this meeting had my favorite example of crafting in public. I sometimes get weird comments about being a crafty scientist. For some reason people find it very contrary to my lab persona. (Although others don’t, Hi Alex!) The president of a big funding agency was at this meeting, and she worked on a needlepoint during all the sessions. It was cool to see.

    My geek husband tells me that this is a big trend right now. Apparently it appeals to you technical types meticulous nature and also exercises the right side of your brain making you better at what you do in the lab.

    Great website!

    How funny - I get the same reaction! My PhD was in Neuroendocrinology and now I work for a charity which funds medical research and I spend a lot of my spare time doing embroidery..
