* silver tree
Posted on October 26th, 2005 by maitreya. Filed under Jewelry.
Finally got the urge to give the silver saw another try tonight. I can definitely tell that it’s getting easier. Only broke one blade this time, too, and that was when it was getting dull. I think I mainly need to work on a good simple design now. This is supposed to be a tree, after the embroidered trees I did a while back. Once I polish it up a bit, I think I’ll solder a ring on the back and wear it as a necklace. Conveniently, I am teaching soldering in lab this week. I wonder if electronics-grade solder will hold up for jewelry use?

Technically, solder is silver, but I don’t know how pure it is - I’m just saying. You know, being mostly unhelpful! :D
Show the tree after you polish it - I’m looking forward to seeing how it looks cleaned up.

Wow! I’m in awe that you are once again venturing into this craft… I’m looking forward to following your progress!

The MSDS for rosin-core solder says no, too much lead exposure (safety gloves are recommended for extensive skin contact). You can get jewelry-safe lead-free solder for about $10, though. Maybe a hobby store around here carries it?

I saw your query about using electronics grade solder, and I would advise against it. It is mostly lead because lead melts at a low temperature…If you are soldering electronics pieces you can’t really use a torch. Lead is very, very, bad when making jewelry because A) you can poison yourself with it! and B) Lead will permanently bond itself to any available piece of metal and cause the host metal to melt in very unattractive ways if exposed to higher heat later on. When I was in school as a metals major, lead was strictly prohibited in the studio, because it has an uncanny ability to spread, like a bad germ. I wouldn’t use it, if I were you. Could you, perhaps, incorporate a cold connected piece that would allow for a loop on the back? It is a lovely piece…
I found this blog through Looby Lu I think, and I really enjoy your work…It is inspiring…very cool wallets!
