* plush seal

Posted on January 9th, 2006 by maitreya. Filed under Toys (cat and kid).

Some friends of mine are having a baby soon, so I made this for him. The pattern is from the Splendid Soft Toy Book, which seems to be carried by every library in the world. The fur is super soft. I’m not so good sewing stretchy fabrics by machine, so it’s all hand-done. I should probably have gone and gotten some different safety eyes, but other than that I’m happy with him.

    very cute! i recently saw a ton of sea lions in the galapagos and they are super cute and friendly in real life too (although none were such a lovely shade of purple!). the perfect companion for a baby.

    I’ve visited your site many times and am very impressed by how you’ve organzied your archives and with the quality of the items you make. It’s been a great inspiration for me. So much so, I’ve looked into Moveable Type for my own site (since that’s what you use!) and am also very curious about which digital camera you use. Might you share which model you have? Your photos always look crisp and well lit, whereas so many don’t online. I’m about to get a new digital camera and would love your advice.

    Keep making beautiful things. And thank you kindly for sharing them with the rest of us.

    Haha, your post goes well with my fishy post today too!

    Your seal looks a wee bit… evil? But cuddlie as hell though!

    That is so sweet! I love that it’s hand stitched. What a lovely gift for your friend. However, safety is really important. As a mother, I wouldn’t give that toy to my infant. They knaw on EVERYTHING and those eyes could create a problem… and when dealing with a baby’s life, you don’t want to take chances. Perhaps some hand embroidered eyes?? Like a satin stitch or a bunch of french knots? Just a thought.

    Thanks for your concern, but I was pretty careful to choose safety eyes that won’t fall off. They’re heavy duty plastic and they attach with a peg and one-directional plate (like a zip tie but metal), so once they’re on, they’re on. I tried to break the pegs off too and they’re solid. When I said I should’ve probably chosen different eyes, I meant non-orange-beady-evil eyes.

    Thanks for the compliments! April, I use a Canon Elph S300, which is 4 or 5 years old. I’m always trying to improve my pictures, but the main things are to use the closeup mode for crafts, and to try to be patient with lighting. I usually take a bunch of pictures, one on every lighting setting, then choose which one looks best. Good luck!

    Could you please consider sending/posting the info to make the seal? My son has a project due at school and I haven’t been able to find the book at the library. Thanks!
