* Bazaar Bizarre

Got Bazaar Bizarre at the library this week. It’s a book spinoff from the Bazaar Bizarre craft fairs. I had high hopes for it, but ended up underwhelmed. Way too much hipster irony crafting going on in this book. Honestly, isn’t it getting a little old yet? Craft patterns can be modern without the whole “punk” act. OK, end rant.
If you can make it past the obnoxious writing, it’s not a bad book. Each section is devoted to a crafter and a project. The profiles are OK (what’s your favorite craft ever, etc). The broad range of projects are explained in depth. There’s a lot of detail, so even if you’ve never done that particular craft you could do it just from the chapter. I wasn’t terribly impressed by the projects, mainly because I’ve seen most of the ideas elsewhere already. Marble magnets? Are you kidding me?

I hear ya’ on that I purchased the book recently and wasn’t overly impressed by it. It’s a hefty book with a lot in it, but many of the projects in it are the same things we’ve all already seen time and time again on the different craft sites.

PS Though I have to add that I think it’s cool that it’s written by a guy! Something different from the norm.

I’ve felt the same way about some of the craft books I’ve read recently. I would really like to see more ideas and patterns for those of us who don’t necessarily want to be crafting the same things our grandmothers would, but are out of high school and don’t want to be making items to pin on our backpacks or hang up in our lockers.

Right off the bat when the book came in the mail I was sad there were not more pictures. I buy a lot of crafty books and it’s all about the pictures baby. This fact alone has not made me pick the book up again, but I am sure eventually I will.

i have heard similar reviews of the getcrafty book. i think it is difficult to write an innovative book when people post most things and how to do them in their craft blogs or posted on getcrafty or craftster. if you are into knitting, you should totally get jess hutch’s book! i love mine!! i also put together a little sewing pattern book, but i currently out of them…i will have more to add tomorrow, though!

hear hear about all the overly hipster crafts out there; i’m tired of them too, especially the ubiquitous skull and crossbone motif. (okay, i’m going to say this too: i’m also a little bird-ed out.) i am curious as to whether or not any of you have been to the bazaar bizarre craft fairs, and whether or not you felt that was the case in person as well.

I just looked through it at the bookstore, but felt the same way as you do about it and didn’t purchase it. I’m always on the lookout for good craft books with innovative ideas and lots of great photographs.

Hi!
I was a vendor at the Cleveland Bazaar Bizarre. I was definitly in the minority in that my designs were modern and pretty. SOOOO much of the stuff was dark, evil, and weird.(…to me) It was a little annoying. It seems like, with the craft show scene, it’s either granny stuff or crazy punk anarchy stuff! What gives!?

Hi–
I’m just echoing what others have already said, but I *completely* agree about ironic hipster crafts being so OVER. I mean, I like sarcasm as much as anyone, but toooooooooo much irony is just plain boring. Japanese crafting demonstrates that it is entirely possible to make charming things without being either too cutesy or too intentionally ironic.
Your blog is really great–I’ve been lurking for a while, so just wanted to say how much I have been inspired by your site!

i am a full time mom and want to sell for extra money. Live in the mountains of western North Carolina and am searching for something unique with the mountain/country theme. can’t sew and not looking for plastic crafts.
