* DNA name bracelet
Posted on November 4th, 2007 by maitreya. Filed under Jewelry.
This might be the geekiest thing I’ve ever made: an ID bracelet coded in DNA.

The Wikipedia Genetic code entry has a table to break the code or encode your own name (U=>T if you prefer DNA to RNA). Note that not all letters are represented since there are only 20 amino acids plus X for stop. You can also go see if some genome already contains your name, by entering it in this DNA search page. No MAITREYAs yet, but there are still lots of things left to sequence!

That is such a cool idea! Does it fit well around your wrist? [Having a long name would entail a necklace perhaps!]

haha, that’s awesome

wow, that’s super nerdly. i love it.
my husband is doing his phd in molecular genetics: zebrafish. he liked your bracelet too.

that’s so quirky. i like the way you think.

Wow, this is so interesting! For a moment, I had a thought about binary coding names.

This is amazingly awesome.
you have taken geekery to a higher level.

about 10 years ago, i was taking a painting class, and we had to make a ‘non-representational’ self portrait (ie, we weren’t supposed to paint a picture of ourself.)
i stitched together several panels with images relating to what was going on in my life at the time- one of which was a DNA sequencing ladder that when translated into the amino acid code spelled out my first and last names- which coincidentally enough all fit within the 20 amino acid limit. (i had just finished sequencing a number of Drosophila genes in the laboratory).
so it’s cool to see you doing the same kind of thing here!
i might post a photo of mine on my blog this week if you want to check it out.

but not every letter of the alfabet is included in those tables right?

This site:
http://www.ebi.ac.uk/training/schools/decode/
..Helped me out a lot. Since not every letter is represented in DNA/RNA, that site will give you the closest represented.

That’s so awesome! Why don’t I ever think of things like this?

Haha, I bet this bracelet gets a lot of comments, and is a great conversation starter. If you don’t scare them away with your geekiness, its the perfect ice breaker.
